Forgotten Islands & Triton Bay | April 2019 | Pindito

The far eastern region of Indonesia that rings the Banda Sea is best explored by live aboard.  For this trip, we took the Pindito across the Banda Sea, traversing the Forgotten Islands and ending in Triton Bay on Papua.  With such a wide area comes a wide variety of environments and animals.  In addition to amazing underwater encounters, the idyllic islands of the Banda Sea and the lush jungles of Papua make for stunning topside vistas.

Pindito anchored off the island of Serua.

BANDA SEA REEFSCAPES

The Banda Sea is well knows for being home to the Spice Islands as well as numerous volcanos that rise from the bottom of the deepest sea in Indonesia and play home to a variety of birds and sea snakes.  While some belch smoke and sulfur, others are lush and feature incredible coral reefs.

SNAKES AND MORE

The islands are home to both olive and banded sea kraits.  Hidden amongst the massive sponges are scorpionfish, turtles and eels.  Passing pelagic and schools of fish are also common.

TRITON BAY REEFSCAPES

Soft corals that reach to the surface and seemingly endless gardens of black corals define the Triton Bay underwater landscape.  Nearby fishing platforms also bring encounters with whale sharks that stop in for a meal of baitfish.
